Tasty sushi hole in the wall on Fraser. Not to be confused with the much larger sushi place (Good Sushi) right next door. Parking is available on the side streets. The layout is one of the most unusual I've ever seen. What looks like the entrance is actually boarded up. Instead, one enters through the door to the adjacent restaurant (Penang Bistro), then turns L to the takeout counter. If one wants to eat in, the seating is shared with Penang as well. Honestly my friends and I were scratching our heads for a while. Guessing the Sake staff rent space from Penang. Staff (1 person) are friendly and chatty. Sushi is I guess average sized for most people. I would say they're on the small side. My sashimi sushi combo was pretty pricy for what is basically 4 sashimi + 5 nigiri. Snack sized. The avocado toro sashimi with yuzu sauce is worth a special mention. Slices of avocado and tuna, with some soy sauce and red cut chili mixed in. This dish disappeared in seconds. I would come back for this dish. Wouldn't mind coming back, though I would be mindful of the smaller portions.

I've learned over the years that Vancouverites tend to judge their sushi restaurants a little more harshly. So, in other words, for me anything over a 3-star on Yelp is probably going to be a pretty phenomenal YVR sushi experience. Well, Sake Maki really blew me away! Located on busy Commercial Dr (aka one of THE foodie streets of Vancouver), the biggest issue I had with this place was finding parking. Once that ginormous task was accomplished, I arrived to find one small table left on a bustling Monday holiday - which was perfect as I was solo. I ordered a bit of sake to warm me up on a blustery day, and dove into their menu - pleasantly surprised to see that they were offering bento box lunch specials! I ordered the salmon bento and a side of hamachi nigiri. It was all fantastic! First, I enjoyed a satisfying bowl of miso soup before the bento arrived. The salmon was perfectly grilled and served over rice, with just the right amount of teriyaki sauce to give it some flavor but not be drowned in it. It came with a crispy green salad with that AMAZING ginger dressing so many Japanese restaurants serve (and for good reason, it's delicious). Beside that was a sushi roll, and four pieces of sashimi. I almost regretted ordering the extra nigiri, as this was one filling lunch (especially for just $18 Canadian). I'm definitely adding this to my Vancouver lineup!

Delicious as usual, we love same maki. Ten choices are plenty and the food is fresh. The deals are awesome and the service is friendly. Basically everything you want out of a sushi spot... hot or cold saki, beer, boxes, fresh sashimi. Honestly, if you're in the mood for sushi and you're in east van, this place won't disappoint.

Fresh, fast, friendly and great value. I highly recommend it! In a sea of worn out sushi joints, this one stands out as its clean and has lots of new plates, cups etc.

Sake maki is my go to restaurant whenever I have to get food delivered to my home. I love their chicken wings, rolls and gyoza. The prawn gyoza is yum, the stuffing is juicy and the gyoza wrapper is thin, making it perfect. Chicken wings are crispy on outside and moist on the inside. The dipping with chick wings tastes amazing. I have tried their dinner combo and it's a great deal. Also, love the rolls here. The only thing which was below my expectation was sushi :) I would however give sushi another try.
